It was supposed to be a night of fun and entertainment, but tragedy marked the day after five persons died after attending a night of music at a Pasay City mall.
In an article written by Joseph Tristan Roxas of GMA News Online, it was disclosed that initially, four people, including an American citizen, were reported to have died after they lost consciousness while attending the “Closeup Forever Summer” open-air concert which was held at the open parking area of SM Mall of Asia.
The four fatalities were American Eric Anthony Miller, 33; Bianca Fontejon, 18; Ariel Leal; and businessman Lance Garcia.
The fifth person who was found unconscious during Closeup’s concert expired while undergoing treatment at a hospital late afternoon of Sunday, May 22. The victim was identified as Ken Migawa, 18 years old.
The five were among an estimated 14,000 revelers who attended the “Closeup Forever Summer” open-air concert, headlined by Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike late Saturday.
According to investigating officer Giovanni Arcinue, the victims did not know each other and were all in different places at the time. “They just collapsed individually,” he added.
Moreover, he said the reason why they fell unconscious is still unknown although police are looking at possible heatstroke or dehydration.
Arcinue also stressed that it is too early to say that the deaths were caused by drug-laced drinks; alluding to rumors spreading on social media. To note, a lot of speculations regarding the cause of death were posted online; with some insinuating that the victims died from drug overdose, while others have claimed that a spiked bottle with water or alcohol was being passed around during the event.
